“The Science Behind Pixar” Opens at Frost Science: 50+ Hands-On Adventures Through the Magic of Animation, Now Through April 2027

The magic of Pixar has officially landed in Miami — and it’s more hands-on than ever.

“The Science Behind Pixar” opened Saturday, October 10, 2026, at the Phillip and Patricia Frost Museum of Science, and it runs through Sunday, April 11, 2027, inside the Hsiao Family Special Exhibition Gallery. The blockbuster exhibition invites visitors to become animators, scientists and storytellers for a day, exploring the real science, technology, engineering, art and math behind everyone’s favorite films.

More than 50 interactive elements walk guests through the eight steps of Pixar’s creative pipeline: Modeling, Rigging, Surfaces, Sets & Cameras, Animation, Simulation, Lighting and Rendering. Tweak camera angles for a bug’s-eye view straight out of “A Bug’s Life,” give virtual characters bones and muscles in Rigging, or tackle the math of lighting the deep ocean of “Finding Nemo.” Along the way, come face-to-face with life-sized recreations of beloved characters: Buzz Lightyear, Dory, Mike and Sulley, WALL•E and the fabulous Edna Mode.

The fun doesn’t stop at the gallery doors: the Animator Pass program, included with admission, turns the whole museum into a Pixar scavenger hunt — learn surfacing with Wall-E and Eve in Power of Science, lighting with Buzz Lightyear in the Vizcaya Village, and balloon simulation from “Up” in Feathers to the Stars.

Admission to the exhibition is included with all museum tickets ($24.95–$29.95; children under 3 free). Developed by the Museum of Science, Boston in collaboration with Pixar Animation Studios. Frost Science, 1101 Biscayne Blvd, Miami.
