Step into The Bass this fall and you’ll find yourself inside a library where everything invites you to pick up the chalk. “Amalia Pica: Lecturas Posibles” (Possible Readings), on view September 17, 2026 through February 12, 2027, transforms the museum’s galleries into an almost two-dimensional library — an immersive, interactive installation where walls, furniture, and familiar objects are coated in chalkboard paint and traced with white, hand-drawn outlines.
Argentine-born, London-based artist Amalia Pica builds environments that celebrate imagination, language, and play as tools for human connection. Here, visitors are invited to redraw, rewrite, and recontextualize everything around them, in a flattened, graphic world that blurs the line between object and image.
The exhibition also nods to The Bass’s own bibliothecal history: the building first opened as the Miami Beach Public Library and Art Center in the 1930s, and Pica reimagined the space as a communal “reading” room — a site of shared authorship for the whole city. It’s playful, family-friendly, and deeply Miami: a place where art becomes a conversation.
