Greater Miami and Miami Beach Celebrate America’s 250th Birthday All Year Long

America turns 250 in 2026, and Greater Miami and Miami Beach is celebrating the milestone in the way only Miami can: with culture, community and sunshine all year long. The destination has joined the national America250 commemoration through a full calendar of educational, public and cultural programming that runs throughout the year.

Miami brings a unique story to the nation’s birthday. Founded in 1896, it is the only major American city founded by a woman — Julia Tuttle — and has grown into one of the nation’s youngest, most diverse and most dynamic destinations, a global crossroads that embodies the entrepreneurial spirit the commemoration honors.

The year’s celebrations span the entire region. Miami-Dade County launched Miami-Dade 250, a program of educational, public and cultural events encouraging residents to explore history and imagine the future. The City of Miami Beach marked the milestone with patriotic community celebrations and cultural programming throughout the year, from family-friendly line dancing in Lummus Park to exhibits celebrating the city’s coastal lifestyle. The City of Miami’s beloved Fourth Fest at Bayfront Park returned as one of the region’s signature Independence Day celebrations, with live entertainment, family activities, food vendors and fireworks over Biscayne Bay. And one of the year’s cultural highlights arrived at the Museum of Miami, when the National Archives brought its traveling exhibition Freedom Plane National Tour: Documents That Forged a Nation, giving visitors a rare chance to experience the historic documents that shaped the United States.

The milestone year also coincides with beloved local anniversaries, including the centennial of Coral Gables. As the national commemoration continues through 2026, residents and visitors alike can still join the celebration — watch for upcoming America250 programming across the destination’s cities and cultural institutions.
