Miami Art Week 2026 just got a major new reason to head to North Miami. The Museum of Contemporary Art, North Miami (MOCA) will present Geoffrey Holder: Black Magic, the first museum survey to celebrate the visual art of a true Renaissance man — the dancer, choreographer, Broadway director and film star who won two Tony Awards for The Wiz and became beloved by millions as Baron Samedi in Live and Let Die.
Featuring more than 60 works in painting, drawing, collage and sculpture — many never before shown publicly — the exhibition reframes Holder’s paintings as the foundation of his prolific creative life. Organized thematically into five sections (Portraits, Epistles, The Sacred and the Profane, Genre and Figure Studies), the works burst with saturated color and sweeping gesture, from biblical allegories restaged with modern sensibility to luminous still lifes. Seen through Holder’s choreographic eye, the human body emerges as both subject and instrument.
Guest curated by Erica Moiah James, PhD, the exhibition opens in November at MOCA, 770 NE 125th Street in North Miami, arriving just in time for the world’s art community to converge on Miami. It is a rare chance to experience the work of one of the 20th century’s most charismatic creative forces in the city he loved — Miami is home to one of the largest concentrations of Holder’s work, and this survey brings it together for the first time.
Admission to MOCA is just $10, and free for MOCA members and North Miami residents. Mark your calendar for a November filled with magic.
