A beautiful new chapter opens at Pérez Art Museum Miami this week. On October 1, the museum welcomes “Anina Major: The Sacred Mangrove,” an immersive exhibition by Bahamian-born artist Anina Major that transforms the humble art of palm-leaf plaiting into powerful contemporary sculpture.
Rooted in Bahamian traditions of weaving, memory, and cultural inheritance, Major works in clay inspired by the palm-plaiting techniques passed down through her own family — a practice deeply woven into the Caribbean’s craft heritage. The result is an exhibition that feels both ancient and utterly contemporary: a celebration of how traditions travel, adapt, and bloom again in new hands.
